Oene van Geel

Oene van Geel (1973) is an adventurer in music. He combines playing (violin, viola and percussion) and composing. On violin and viola he is known for his improvisational skills and his special pizzicato techniques.

His main groups are: Zapp String Quartet, Eric Vaarzon Morel trio, Estafest and the Oxymore quintet.

He played / worked with: Mike Keneally, Benoit Delbecq, George Coleman, B.C. Manjunath, James Campbell, David Kweksilber, Uri Caine, Jozef Dumoulin, Jesse van Ruller, Anton Goudsmit, Jeroen van Vliet, Mete Erker, Mark Helias, Jeffrey Bruinsma, Afra Mussawisade, Vera van der Poel and many others.

He won the following prices: Deloitte Jazz Award (2002), Jur Naessens Music Prize (2000), Kersjes Prize (2005, with the Zapp String Quartet).

As a composer Oene writes mostly chamber music with elements of jazz, rock, (free) improvisation and ethnic music such as Indian, African and Flamenco music.

He wrote music for the following groups:
Zapp String Quartet, Matangi Quartet, Ziggurat, Calefax, Ricciotti ensemble, Amsterdam Cello Biennale 2008, Tetzepi Bigtet, Saxkartel, Estafest, Eric Vaarzon Morel trio, Duo Bilitis and a theatre production for the Maxtak ensemble. Since many years Oene gets support from the Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst.

He got composition assignments from the following festivals: November Music (2006), North Sea Jazz Festival (2005), SJU Jazz Festival (2002) and the Marathon Festival (2002).
